Loved this idea from visualspatial.org to draw related images into the text of a sight word. I saw the idea awhile ago, but just hadn't tried it yet. It seemed just one more idea to try. Boy do I wish I had tried it sooner! Eliana is pretty visual and a whole word approach comes much easier to her than phonics. She seems to rely on phonics for writing, and whole word for reading. On her own she spends much more time writing than reading.
Well, this simple concept worked like a charm. She looked at them once while coloring her words of the day and now she can recognize those words even without the related images on them. She was even able to replace starting letters to recognize similar words. (book/look, love/dove).
So here is the front of the ones she made-

We wrote the same word without the images on the back of each card so we could flip them and see if they were working without the images. Even after just the initial coloring it was obvious she didn't need the images anymore. I'm amazed how easy this was for her.

See what a great teacher you would make! Tailoring to each child's need:)
That's a really cool concept!
