We just started 4H in November and I have found it all rather cryptic and confusing thus far. Today we sat down to do our Clover Bud Journals, and boy am I glad we did. I *might* be guilty of thinking about just never showing up again, I mean here I needed to do a journal on content I didn't even really understand. I mean I'm not sure I even really understood the point of 4H until today, so the thought of doing a journal was a little... odd. To say the least.
However, sitting down and doing the journal really helped me understand what 4H was all about. It helped me understand what things I should track for next year's journal. It was a good thing to sit down and focus on today.
The girls essentially have to have a main goal or project for the year. For example, Malia's is horse science. She gets to count all her interaction with the horses, as well as her research and projects about horses. We tally the hours, the projects, the events she participated in. In addition to your main project you have other projects. Arts & Humanties, Wood Working, Food and Nutrition, Theatre, the list of categories is quite involved and so there are plenty of options for everyone.
You also create a list of awards or achievements you made over the year, ways in which you participated in community service, clubs and classes you are involved in, and so forth.
As they get older they will include pictures and samples of their work. Now that I'm looking at it, it seems to be such an organized way to look over all that you accomplished in the year. It is nice to have a journal to look at to see so much of what you did for yourself, for your community, how much your learned... I'm just really excited about it.
Now that I understand it that is :)

And I thought 4H was only about animals.
Cole has to keep a journal for his trip or not get credit for it. He got his yesterday.
